Richard Avedon & Truman Capote – Observations – First UK Edition – 1959 – Complete with Original Acetate Jacket and Slipcase
A highly desirable and remarkably well-preserved copy of Richard Avedon's landmark first book, Observations, featuring photographs by Richard Avedon and commentary by Truman Capote.
First UK Edition, published in 1959 by Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, simultaneously with the American edition.
The book was printed in Lucerne, Switzerland, by Camera Publishers, C. J. Bucher Ltd., with typography by Typographic Craftsmen, Inc., New York City.
One of the landmark photographic publications of the twentieth century, Observations represents the first book collection of Richard Avedon's photographs. The volume combines Avedon's extraordinary portraits with Truman Capote's literary observations and includes images of some of the most important cultural figures of the period.
This copy is particularly attractive because it remains complete with both its original transparent acetate dust jacket and the original publisher's slipcase.
Condition
Book: Very Good
The book itself is in exceptionally well-preserved condition and presents beautifully. The binding is sound, the interior is clean and fresh, and the photographic pages are remarkably well preserved.
Original transparent acetate dust jacket: Good.
The original fragile transparent acetate jacket is present. It shows age-related wear and has several tears and small losses along the edges. Despite these imperfections, it remains an important and increasingly scarce original component, as these delicate acetate jackets are frequently missing from surviving copies.
Original publisher's slipcase: Good.
The original slipcase is structurally complete and remains fully functional. It shows noticeable signs of age and handling, including substantial surface scratching, rubbing and areas of soiling. These cosmetic imperfections are clearly visible and should be considered when assessing the overall condition.
A particularly attractive and highly collectible example of Richard Avedon's first major book publication, preserved with its original acetate jacket and publisher's slipcase. The book itself is in near fine condition, making this a very desirable copy despite the expected age-related wear to the fragile acetate jacket and the more noticeable cosmetic wear to the slipcase.
