【Product details】

An elegant Japanese portable tea ceremony set from Showa Period, designed for enjoying tea outdoors or while travelling. The centrepiece is a finely woven bamboo tea basket made by Kyoto bamboo craftsman Genjiku Kurita (栗田元竺), accompanied by a carefully assembled selection of tea utensils. The set is housed in its original signed paulownia-wood outer box.

The woven bamboo basket has a sophisticated black finish and lacquered rim decorated with delicate gold maki-e. Its interior is lined with luxurious gold brocade fabric featuring an elegant floral arabesque pattern. The signed paulownia-wood outer box bears Kurita’s signature and seal, together with the inscriptions 御茶籠 and 皆具一席, referring to the tea basket and complete utensil set.

The set comprises 19 pieces: the woven bamboo tea basket; two tea bowls; a gourd-shaped lacquer tea caddy with purple net bag; a tea-whisk container; a natsume with textile pouch; a wooden incense container with textile pouch; a rectangular lacquer box with textile pouch; a bamboo tea scoop with textile sheath; a folding tea-ceremony fan; and four traditional textile pieces. The signed paulownia-wood outer box is also included but is not counted among the 19 pieces.

The two tea bowls have contrasting designs. The grey bowl is decorated with carved geometric patterns, with additional incised and stamped decoration inside. The black bowl bears a pottery mark near the foot. The accompanying lacquerware includes richly finished red and dark-brown wooden utensils, while the folding fan is decorated with illustrations of historic tea bowls accompanied by explanatory Japanese text. The combination of lacquerware, ceramics, bamboo work and textiles gives the set a refined and cohesive appearance.

The set is in good to very good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and use, including small surface marks and minor blemishes. Please review all photographs carefully for the individual condition of each component.

※Important: For Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Monaco and Portugal, orders of €150 or less cannot currently be shipped due to the new €3 customs duty/IOSS issue.
