Samurai Armor (Gusoku) — Two-Piece Cuirass, Red Lacquer, Moegi Thread
Early Edo Period (江戸時代前期)

Certificate designation: 鉄朱漆塗切付伊予札萌黄糸素懸威二枚胴具足 (Tetsu shu-urushi-nuri kiritsuke iyo-zane moegi-ito suken-odoshi nimai-dō gusoku)

A complete suit of samurai armor (gusoku) dating to the early Edo period, constructed of iron finished in red lacquer (shu-urushi). The armor employs kiritsuke iyozane plates — solid iron plates carved and lacquered to imitate individually laced scales — joined with sparse (suken/sugake) lacing in moegi (yellow-green) silk cord. The cuirass is of nimai-dō type, a two-piece, side-hinged construction.

Kabuto (helmet): a smooth, brightly red-lacquered bowl fitted with a crescent-shaped gilt maedate (frontal crest). The menpo (facial armor) is black-lacquered, with expressive carved features — deep wrinkles, an open mouth, and a natural-hair mustache — completed by a red-lacquered yodare-kake (throat guard) trimmed in green cord.

Sode (shoulder guards): lamellar plates lacquered in a golden/ochre tone, laced in olive-green cord.

Dō (cuirass): kiritsuke iyozane plates in dark red lacquer, laced in the same sparse moegi-green style as the rest of the armor.

Kusazuri (tassets): articulated plates with alternating red and green lacing.

Kote (sleeves): chainmail (kusari) with small iron plates mounted on indigo-patterned cotton fabric, paired with black-lacquered fist covers (tekko) bearing a metal-mounted mon (family crest).

Certification: the armor is accompanied by an authentication certificate issued by the 公益社団法人日本甲冑武具研究保存会 (Japan Armor & Arms Research Preservation Society, a certified public-interest association), grading it as 特別貴重資料 — "Especially Valuable Material" (Tokubetsu Kicho Shiryo). Certificate No. 特貴 2359, dated September 14, 2025.

The Ii clan and the "akazonae" (red units): armor lacquered entirely in red is historically associated in Japan with akazonae (赤備え, "red-equipped" units) — military formations that dressed their entire panoply, from armor and helmets to banners and even horses, in vivid red, aiming to intimidate the enemy and give the unit visual cohesion. The most famous example is the Ii clan (井伊氏), lords of the Hikone domain: after the fall of the Takeda clan in 1582, Tokugawa Ieyasu absorbed former Takeda retainers — heirs to their own red-unit tradition — under the command of Ii Naomasa (井伊直政), one of the "Four Guardian Kings of Tokugawa" (徳川四天王). His troops, known as the "Ii Red Devils" (井伊の赤鬼), fought under this identity in decisive campaigns such as Sekigahara (1600), and the Hikone domain maintained the red-armor tradition throughout the Edo period.
