‘San Francesco’ is a symbolic abstract portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi.
The small centred figure occupies a blue field, creating a quiet and almost devotional presence. Five white marks above the figure refer to one of the defining moments of Francis’s life at La Verna, Italy.
Created in 2026, eight hundred years after the death of Saint Francis.
The lateral view reveals the adjacent faces of the cubes, extending the image beyond the frontal surface and emphasizing the sculptural nature of the work.
Giovanni Contardi is an Italian artist internationally recognised for his mosaics created entirely from original Rubik’s Cubes. His installations are permanently exhibited at the Rossini National Museum in Italy and at Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel at Disneyland Paris.
His work was also mentioned by Ernő Rubik, inventor of the Rubik’s Cube, in his autobiographical book Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All (2020).
