Hamilton's history

Founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Hamilton built its name on railroad timekeeping, where an inaccurate watch meant a collision. It became known as The Watch of Railroad Accuracy, and the reputation carried it into military service: Hamilton supplied the US forces through both World Wars, and in 1942 halted civilian production entirely to make watches for the military.

In 1957 it produced the Ventura — the world's first electric watch — later worn by Elvis Presley. Hamilton has appeared in more than 500 films, from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Interstellar. Manufacturing moved to Switzerland under the Swatch Group, and the watches have been Swiss Made since.

The Jazzmaster Gent

Named for the era when Hamilton was at its most American, the Jazzmaster is the brand's dress line, and the Gent is its most restrained expression.

38mm across and 8mm thick. Those two numbers are the point. A dress watch has one non-negotiable requirement — it must pass under a shirt cuff without catching — and the industry spent two decades ignoring it in favour of 42mm cases and 12mm profiles. This one still does what a dress watch is supposed to do, and 38mm has since become the size enthusiasts specifically hunt for.

The dial

Black, worked in two concentric tones: a slightly darker central disc against a lifted outer ring, so the surface reads with depth rather than as flat black. Applied Arabic numerals at the even hours alternate with polished baton markers, and a fine railway minute track runs around the edge — the detail that ties the design back to Hamilton's railroad origins.

Hands and markers carry Super-LumiNova. The date sits at 3 o'clock in a framed aperture. SWISS MADE below 6.

Two practical points

The crystal is sapphire, not mineral glass — at this price point that is unusual, and it is the reason the dial stays legible after years of wear when the case does not.

The 20mm lug width is the most common strap size in watchmaking. Every strap style made — leather, canvas, rubber, steel mesh — is available in 20mm, so the watch can be changed from formal to casual for the cost of a strap.

Why quartz here is the right choice

On a dress watch, quartz is not the compromise it is on a sports watch. A dress watch spends most of its life in a drawer and comes out for specific occasions. An automatic left unworn stops, and has to be reset and rewound each time. This one is correct when you pick it up, every time, for three years on a battery.
