Obv: Head of Ares to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet.
Rev: AMIΣOY. Sword in sheath; to lower left and right, monograms.

Mithradates VI of Pontos (120–63 BC), known as Mithradates the Great, expanded his kingdom across Anatolia and the Black Sea and challenged Roman dominance as a champion of Greek freedom. He launched the Mithradatic Wars and orchestrated the Asiatic Vespers, but was ultimately defeated by Pompey. Betrayed by his son, he died after poison failed because of his self-developed immunity. He is remembered as a warrior, ruler, patron, and pioneer of toxicology.
