Shikunsizu Tokkuri 四君子図 徳利 しくんしず とっくり｜Mitsui Tamekichi 三代 三ツ井為吉 さんだい みついためきち

Tamekichi Mitsui is a painter and ceramic artist who inherits the traditional techniques of Ko-Kutani and Yoshidaya kiln, which are the origins of Kutani ware.
It is a high-class sake vessel that uses traditional Kutani five colors to paint auspicious patterns.
The four gentlemen drawn on the surface of the bottle refers to a traditional oriental painting pattern combining four plants: orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, and plum.
Each plant's noble traits are likened to a person of virtue (gentleman).
A sake vessel with these four gentlemen drawn together is considered a very lucky item symbolizing unchanging virtue, high integrity, and longevity and prosperity.
The four gentlemen are placed inside a twisting pattern that diagonally divides the body.

Artist Profile:
Born in Αϊτσί Prefecture in 1935.
Graduated from Kanazawa College of Art, Department of Ceramics in 1959, and studied under Professor Tojiro Kitade and Culture Medal recipient Isokichi Asakura.
Selected for Modern Art Exhibition, Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Exhibition, and Nitten between 1960 and 1967.
Succeeded to the name Tamekichi Mitsui III in 1961.
Presented works to U.S. Ambassador Reischauer in 1962, as well as presentations to the Imperial Family and purchase by Prince Mikasa in 1976 and 1993.
Appointed to produce gifts for official visits to China by successive Prime Ministers (Prime Ministers Ohira, Suzuki, and Nakasone) between 1979 and 1987.
Received Minister of Labor Commendation in 1971 and Prime Minister Commendation in 1987.
Served as visiting professor at Gallaudet University in the U.S. and Ratchasuda University in Thailand between 1997 and 2003.
