Ann(an) Blue & White "Lobster & Water Plant" Tea Bowls (Set of 2; Originai & Revival Copy)
This lot features a compelling study pair of Vietnamese blue and white ("Annan") tea bowls decorated with hand-painted lobsters (shrimps) and aquatic plants. In Japanese tea ceremony culture, Annan ceramics from Vietnam were highly cherished from the Momoyama period (15th century) onward for their rustic, unpretentious charm and expressive cobalt brushwork.
1. Antique Vietnamese Original (古安南 Ko-Annan)
Estimated Age: 16th – early 17th Century (Annam / Vietnam)
Features two freely painted lobsters interspersed with water grass motifs in underglaze cobalt blue. The surface exhibits a wonderfully aged crackle glaze (kannyu) that has absorbed a soft, warm amber tone through centuries of care. The unglazed foot rim displays the typical "sand foot" texture resulting from traditional stacking kilns.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 10.5 cm
Height: 6.8 cm
Weight: 275 g
2. Japanese Revival Copy (安南写 Annan Utsushi)
Estimated Age: Late Meiji to Early Showa Period (Late 19th – Early 20th Century, Japan)
An exquisite Japanese interpretation honoring the famous "Annan Shiboride" (bleeding cobalt glaze) style. The cobalt blue underglaze bleeds artfully along the rim and motifs, recreating the prized hazy effect. The foot rim faithfully mimics the coarse clay and sand-baked texture of the original.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 10.2 cm
Height: 7.2 cm
Weight: 318 g
Condition
Both pieces are in very good antique/vintage condition with no significant chips, hair line cracks, or repairs. Natural glaze crazing, minor kiln flaws, and historical staining are present, adding to the authentic character of the items. Please examine the detailed photos closely.
