Περιγραφή από τον πωλητή
Ανδρικό figura, Losso (Nawdba), βορειοανατολική Γκάνα; Northern Togo, Kara Region, πιθανώς Doufelgou Prefecture.
Μάρτυρας: Karim Wassiou. Περιλαμβάνει στήριξη
Ανα carved from a dense wood, this male figure is characterized by a compact, powerful conception of the human body and a marked reduction of anatomical detail. Two massive, slightly parted legs support a rounded, almost spherical torso. The abbreviated arms project laterally from the body, while the male genitalia are prominently rendered. The comparatively large, rounded head rests almost directly on the shoulders, with virtually no articulated neck. The facial features are reduced to a few essential elements: small recessed eyes, a barely projecting nose, and a short, incised mouth. Fine linear incisions on the cheeks and additional markings on the body may represent scarification or other forms of body marking, although their specific significance cannot be determined with certainty.
Particularly striking is the interplay between strongly modelled volumes and an extreme economy of detail. Head, abdomen, chest, and thighs are conceived as substantial, almost autonomous masses joined into a highly concentrated sculptural form. The irregular dark brown surface, with areas of abrasion, encrustation, and traces of prolonged handling or use, further emphasizes the figure’s strongly sculptural presence.
The traditional attribution “Losso” requires some qualification. In a narrower ethnolinguistic sense, the designation is particularly associated with the Nawdba, or Nawda, whose principal area of settlement lies in northern Togo, in today’s Kara Region and especially in the Doufelgou Prefecture. Important Nawdba communities are found around Niamtougou and in the areas of Siou, Koka, Baga, and Ténéga. The Nawdba speak Nawdm, a Gur language belonging to the Oti-Volta group and closely related, among others, to Yom in northern Benin.
Historically, however, the term “Losso” was not applied exclusively to the Nawdba. Particularly during the colonial period, it was sometimes employed as a collective designation for several populations inhabiting Doufelgou and neighbouring areas, including Lama- or Lamba-speaking communities. The Nawdba and Lamba are nevertheless distinct both linguistically and ethnographically. The Lamba speak Lama, a separate Gur language, and their settlement area extends farther north and northwest, notably around Défalé, Kadjalla, and Kanté in the present-day Kéran Prefecture, as well as into adjoining areas of northern Benin.
This historical overlap in terminology helps explain why sculptures from northern Togo have variously been classified in older collections and on the art market as “Losso,” “Lamba,” or “Losso-Lamba.” In the absence of a provenance extending to a precise place of origin, a definitive ethnic attribution based on stylistic criteria alone remains problematic. For a figure traditionally identified as Losso, the designation “Losso (Nawdba), Northern Togo” therefore appears appropriate, provided that “Losso” is understood as a historically established but not entirely precise ethnographic term.
Selected literature: Jean-Claude Froelich, Notes sur les Naoudemba du Nord-Togo; Robert Cornevin, Histoire du Togo, Paris: Berger-Levrault, 1962; Bernard Lucien-Brun, Les migrations rurales des Kabyè et des Losso (Togo); see also the relevant ethnographic writings of Leo Frobenius on the populations of northern Togo and linguistic studies concerning Nawdm and Lama.
