A striking Belgian Art Deco glass vase by Doyen, dating from the 1930s.

Entirely handmade, the vase was individually blown in warm amber-coloured glass, giving it a rich golden tone that becomes particularly luminous when exposed to natural light. Its rounded, sculptural form is decorated with a distinctive deeply modelled pattern reminiscent of honeycomb, creating a beautiful interplay of transparency, reflections and optical depth.

The surface decoration gives the vase an almost architectural quality, while the elegant scalloped, hand-finished rim emphasizes its artisanal character. The combination of the organic spherical silhouette and rhythmic geometric pattern is particularly representative of the decorative experimentation of the Art Deco period.

At approximately 21 cm high, the vase has a substantial decorative presence while retaining beautifully balanced proportions.

It is preserved in very good condition, with no chips, cracks or deep scratches — particularly remarkable considering that the vase is approaching a century old. Minor traces of age and handmade production may naturally be present.

In the early 20th century, Jean-Baptiste Doyen and his son Gaston established a glass factory in Havré-Ville, near Mons, Belgium. Originally named Verreries Gobeleteries d’Havré-Ville, the company specialized in producing high-quality blown glassware, including tableware, lighting, and decorative pieces. Doyen’s work became particularly renowned for its Art Deco designs, featuring elegant shapes, refined engravings, and meticulous craftsmanship. A notable example is a set of mouth-blown glasses adorned with finely scoured olive shapes and intricate fan patterns, showcasing the exquisite attention to detail of the era.

Among Doyen’s most celebrated creations is the “Floralies” series, which embodies the refined elegance of Art Deco design. Produced in the early 20th century, these vases are distinguished by their bold geometric forms, intricate detailing, and rich, vibrant colors. One of the most remarkable models, no. 150, crafted in the 1930s, features striking vertical stripes and a distinctive corrugated collar, often produced in warm brown glass. Many pieces from the series still bear the “Floralies” label, preserving their legacy and making them easily recognizable among collectors.

Today, Doyen’s glassware remains highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of Belgian Art Deco pieces. Their timeless elegance and historical significance continue to make them prized additions to vintage collections, standing as a testament to Belgium’s rich glassmaking tradition and artistic heritage.
