The painted front displays an auspicious arrangement of peonies together with cranes and deer within a circular landscape. In Tibetan and Chinese decorative tradition, peonies represent prosperity, honour and a flourishing life; cranes symbolise longevity; and paired deer are associated with marital harmony, prosperity and good health. These motifs made cabinets of this type especially suitable as wedding or dowry gifts.

According to the previous owner’s history, this cabinet was originally presented as a wedding gift. This information is offered as family provenance and is not supported by written documentation.

The cabinet has an unusual traditional construction. Two long wooden sections in the top lift away to provide access to the spacious interior, and the decorated front panel is removable. Cabinets of this elongated form are sometimes described as Tibetan sword cabinets, as they were suitable for storing long ceremonial or personal objects, textiles and household valuables.

The front retains attractive hand-painted polychrome decoration and a deep, naturally aged patina. It is fitted with two recessed metal ring handles with engraved backplates.

Condition:
Authentic aged and unrestored appearance, with considerable wear consistent with age and use. There are scratches, fading, paint and lacquer losses, cracks, opened joints, old repairs and areas of wood loss. One lower corner shows notable historic damage and repair. The removable panels and interior also show wear and surface marks. No key is included. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

The cabinet remains a highly decorative and imposing example of Himalayan painted furniture. Because of its size and weight, professional furniture transport or collection is recommended.
