Ένα intriguing silver amulet of striking openwork construction, attributed to the Viking / Early Medieval period.

The pendant is formed around a strong central vertical axis, surrounded by four open compartments and enclosed within a pointed, radiating border. The composition gives the object an almost solar or celestial character, while the central element evokes the form of a stylized tree, human figure or sacred pillar.

Within a Norse symbolic interpretation, this central axis may recall Yggdrasil, the World Tree, the great cosmic structure connecting the different realms of Norse mythology. The surrounding openwork can consequently be viewed as representing the ordered world around a sacred centre, while the projecting outer points give the amulet a distinctly protective, almost shield-like appearance.

Another possible interpretation is that the central form represents a guardian or stylized anthropomorphic figure, surrounded by a radiant protective enclosure. Such ambiguity is part of the fascination of early medieval amuletic objects, where geometric, human, vegetal and cosmological imagery can merge into a single design.

The silver surface retains visible age-related wear, irregularities and darker deposits within the recesses, emphasizing the openwork construction and giving the pendant considerable character.

Presented on a modern silver-coloured chain, allowing the historical object to be worn as a distinctive piece of jewellery. The chain is a modern addition.
