Obv: Diademed classical head left, hair in curls, with star below the chin; within a beaded square. Arabic mint and date inscription around: ضرب بالموصل سنة احد وثلثين وستمائة. “Struck at al-Mawsil in the year six hundred and thirty-one” (AH 631).
Rev: الإمام المستنصر بالله أمير المؤمنين. “The Imam al-Mustansir billah, Commander of the Faithful”; arranged in four lines. Marginal inscription: بدر الدنيا والدين لؤلؤ الملك الكامل الملك الأشرف. “Full Moon of the World and the Faith, Lu’lu’; the Perfect King; the Most Noble King”; naming Badr al-Din Lu’lu’ and his Ayyubid overlords al-Kamil and al-Ashraf.

Badr al-Din Lu’lu’ rose from slavery to become regent for the Zengid rulers of Mosul, then established his own dynasty. His reign saw flourishing metalwork, architecture and manuscript production. Through shifting alliances with the Ayyubids and Mongols, he preserved his authority until his death in 1259. His coinage reflects these political relationships through inscriptions naming the caliph and his overlords.
