This image of the “Radical Cat,” which I continually receive requests for, was originally created for a feline-themed art show from a few years ago. Since “cat video” is a euphemism for indicating the silliest and lowest-quality content you can find on the internet, I decided to try to connect my particular cat image to something meaningful to me in a playful way. I have long been a fan of Black Panther activism and I thought to use another euphemism, “black cats,” which in 1960s/70s language referred to fashionable Black people, to emphasize that the Black Panthers were vilified and targeted by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI because they were considered “radical” and an internal terrorist threat (presumably). It’s the same nonsense that the Department of Justice under Trump is trying to use against antifascists and other protesters… don’t fall for it! If you don’t know Hoover’s mission to destroy the Black Panthers, educate yourself. I recommend Bobby Seale’s book, co-founder of the Black Panther Party, “Seize the Time.” And for those of you who love black cats, know that you’re wonderful as well: a portion of the proceeds from this print will be donated to the ASPCA for the work they do finding homes for dogs and cats. Stay radical!
