About the print
This double-page spread comes from a yakusha ehon, a genre of Edo-period illustrated book devoted to portraying kabuki actors off the stage rather than in character — a popular counterpart to single-sheet actor prints that let readers see performers as public figures in their everyday routines. Here five actors are shown together before a theatre's crest, a type of scene that commemorated a troupe's association with a particular playhouse. Utagawa Toyokuni I was the leading actor-print designer of his generation and the teacher of Kunisada; his own actor ehon, produced around the turn of the 19th century, are known for this kind of informal group composition built around real, named performers.
