### Origin & History

Australian Black Opal from **Lightning Ridge, New South Wales**, is regarded as one of the world's most prized and sought-after precious opals. Lightning Ridge is particularly famous for its dark-bodied black opal, where brilliant flashes of red, orange, green, blue, violet and other colours appear against a naturally dark background.

Opal was discovered around Lightning Ridge in the late 1800s, with significant mining developing in the early 1900s. The region remains internationally renowned for producing some of the finest black opal ever found.

Geologically, Lightning Ridge opal formed within ancient Cretaceous sediments. Silica released during the weathering of the surrounding rocks was carried by groundwater into cavities and claystone layers, where it gradually precipitated to form opal over geological timescales. Much of the black opal is found several metres below the surface in the area's famous "opal dirt".

The dark body tone is one of the characteristics that makes Lightning Ridge black opal so spectacular: it provides a powerful contrast that allows the play-of-colour to appear exceptionally vivid and deep.
