1768 VOC Netherlands East Indies Duit – West Friesland – NGC Certified Genuine – Dutch East India Company Colonial Coin
An authentic 1768 VOC duit issued for circulation in the Netherlands East Indies and attributed to West Friesland. This historic copper coin belongs to the colonial monetary system of the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, better known as the Dutch East India Company or VOC.
The coin has been professionally authenticated and encapsulated by NGC with the designation:
“1768 VOC N.E. INDIES DUIT
W. FRIESLAND
GENUINE”
NGC certification number: 8447947-045.
This example dates from 1768, placing it firmly within the mature eighteenth-century period of VOC activity. At this time, the Dutch East India Company operated an extensive maritime trading network linking the Netherlands with southern Africa, India, Ceylon, Southeast Asia and the Indonesian archipelago.
The duit was a small copper denomination used extensively for everyday transactions throughout the Netherlands East Indies. Coins of this type circulated through ports, settlements and commercial centres and formed part of the practical monetary system used for wages, purchases and ordinary local trade.
The central design features the famous intertwined VOC monogram, formed from the initials of Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie. The VOC emblem became one of the earliest internationally recognizable corporate symbols and appeared on coins, shipping equipment, documents, cargo and many other objects associated with the company.
Below the monogram, the date 1768 remains clearly visible. This provides a precise chronological attribution and makes the coin particularly suitable for collectors building date sets or provincial collections of VOC duits.
The attribution to West Friesland adds additional numismatic interest. West Friesland was one of the Dutch regional authorities involved in the broader provincial coinage system of the Dutch Republic. VOC duits were produced under several provincial authorities, including West Friesland, Zeeland, Utrecht and Holland, and these regional distinctions are an important part of specialist VOC collecting.
The coin shows extensive but honest circulation wear. The VOC monogram remains identifiable and the date 1768 is still legible. The surfaces display a deep brown to reddish-brown patina with darker areas, light oxidation and natural surface texture consistent with an eighteenth-century copper coin that has survived for more than 250 years.
NGC has authenticated the coin as GENUINE rather than assigning a numerical grade. The certification confirms the piece as an authentic historic VOC issue while preserving the visible circulation wear and surface characteristics.
The coin is securely housed in an official NGC holder, providing professional third-party authentication and protection from direct handling. The maritime-themed NGC label featuring a historic Dutch sailing vessel is particularly appropriate for a coin connected with the seaborne trading history of the Dutch East India Company.
VOC duits have strong cross-collecting appeal because they sit at the intersection of several fields: Dutch numismatics, Netherlands East Indies coinage, Indonesian colonial currency, maritime history, early corporate history and eighteenth-century international trade.
The year 1768 places this coin in a period when the VOC was still a major commercial force in Asia. Small copper denominations such as the duit were essential to everyday economic activity within the Dutch East Indies and today provide a direct physical link to the monetary life of the eighteenth-century colonial world.
This specimen therefore represents more than simply an old copper coin. It is a tangible artifact of the Dutch East India Company, West Friesland provincial coinage, Netherlands East Indies monetary history and the wider commercial networks that connected Europe and Asia.
An excellent addition for collectors searching for an authentic VOC coin, 1768 VOC duit, West Friesland VOC duit, Dutch East India Company coin, Netherlands East Indies coin, NGC certified VOC coin, Dutch colonial coin, Indonesian colonial coin, VOC copper coin, Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie coin, West Friesland colonial coin, eighteenth-century Dutch coin, VOC monogram coin, Dutch maritime history, East Indies currency, historic trade coin or certified colonial numismatics.
The coin shown in the photographs is the exact specimen offered and will be supplied in its original NGC certification holder.
