1785 VOC Duit – Utrecht – Dutch East Indies – NGC Certified Genuine
A genuine 1785 VOC duit attributed to Utrecht and professionally authenticated and encapsulated by NGC.
The coin features the famous intertwined VOC monogram of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, better known as the Dutch East India Company. The date 1785 appears clearly beneath the monogram, placing this piece in the later decades of the VOC’s existence.
Founded in 1602, the VOC developed into one of the most powerful commercial organizations of the early modern world. Its ships and trading network connected the Netherlands with southern Africa, India, Ceylon, Southeast Asia, China, Japan and the Indonesian archipelago. The company played a major role in the international trade of spices, textiles, tea, coffee, porcelain and many other commodities.
Copper duits such as this were practical small-denomination coins used in everyday commerce. They formed part of the monetary system associated with the Dutch East Indies and other territories connected to VOC activity. Unlike large silver or gold coins, these copper pieces represent the ordinary economic life of the colonial trading world.
This example is attributed to Utrecht, one of the most important historical minting centers in the Netherlands. Utrecht played a major role in Dutch coin production over several centuries, and its VOC-related issues form an important area within Dutch colonial and provincial numismatics.
The year 1785 places this coin only fourteen years before the formal dissolution of the Dutch East India Company in 1799. By this period, the VOC was facing increasing financial and administrative difficulties, yet it still maintained a wide commercial network across Asia.
The VOC monogram remains particularly clear on this example, and the 1785 date is sharply visible beneath it. The surfaces show natural reddish-brown and dark brown patination with visible circulation wear and age-related surface irregularities. Compared with many heavily worn VOC copper coins, the principal design elements on this piece remain especially easy to recognize.
This coin has been professionally authenticated by NGC and is designated GENUINE under certification number 8447941-013.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they show the exact coin offered and form an important part of the condition description.
