Mstera - Κουτί - παπιέρ μασέ - Ρώσικο Κουτί Λάκερ

Decorative Russian lacquer miniature box from Mstera, executed in the traditional lacquer painting technique on papier-mâché.

The box has an unusual architectural form and is richly decorated with hand-painted scenes. The central panels depict a traditional Russian Troika, with a sleigh drawn by three horses, while individual horses decorate the upper sections.

The black lacquer ground is embellished throughout with fine gold-coloured floral and ornamental detailing. The hinged lid opens to reveal a striking red lacquered interior.

The object is marked “Мстёра” (Mstera), identifying it with the renowned Russian centre of lacquer miniature painting.

The combination of the Troika subject, black lacquer, red interior, miniature painting and extensive gold decoration is characteristic of traditional Mstera lacquerware.

An attractive and unusual example, particularly because of its distinctive stepped architectural shape.
