Πολύ ελκυστική φαιενς σε ελαφρώς γαλαζοπράσινο χρώμα, ωραία σκαλισμένα τα χαρακτηριστικά του σώματος και του κεφαλιού, μακριά αυτιά και κυρτωμένη ουρά, δαχτυλίδι στην κορυφή για ανάρτηση.

Ένχνευμον (ichneumon) είναι ο αιγυπτιακός μονγκόζος (Herpestes ichneumon), ένα σ’omάγγα σαρκοβόρου θηλαστικού που είναι ενδημικό στη Βόρεια Αφρική και τη Μέση Ανατολή. Η λέξη προέρχεται από τα Αρχαία Ελληνικά (ikhneúmōn), σημαίνοντας "ιχνηλάτης" ή "συνοδοιπορός", αναφερόμενη στη συνήθειά του να παρακολουθεί το θήραμα.

Στην αιγυπτιακή αρχαία πίστη, ο ichneumon λάμβανε αγιοποιημένη φύση ως ιερό, προστατευτικό ζώο που αντιπροσώπευε τη νίκη του φωτός και της κοσμικής τάξης (Ma'at) επί του χάους και του κακού (Isfet).

The Snake Killer: In nature, mongooses actively hunt venomous snakes (like cobras) and consume crocodile eggs. To Egyptians, this real-world behavior translated directly into mythology: the ichneumon was viewed as the ultimate enemy of Apep (Apophis), the giant chaos serpent who tried to devour the sun god Ra every night.

Manifestation of Solar Deities: The creature was closely associated with solar worship. Ra, Horus, and Atum were sometimes depicted taking the form of an ichneumon to battle demonic forces.

Aspect of Horus and Wadjet: In the Delta region (particularly at Letopolis), the ichneumon was worshipped alongside the shrew mouse. While the blind shrew symbolized darkness and night, the sharp-eyed ichneumon represented light, vision, and the day—forming a dual aspect of the god Horus.

Domestic Protection

Egyptians often kept tamed mongooses in homes and granaries to control cobras, vipers, and rodents.

Votive Statuettes
During the Late and Ptolemaic Periods, small bronze or wood statues of ichneumons standing upright with raised paws were offered at temples to seek divine protection.
Mummification
Thousands of mummified ichneumons have been found in sacred animal catacombs (such as at Bubastis and Saqqara), buried as sacred offerings to solar gods.
