Dial and Hands

Case and Crystal

Good vintage condition. The exceptionally clean dial presents beautifully, though the gold-tone hands show light oxidation and micro-spotting under magnification. The polished stainless steel case and bezel exhibit moderate surface scratches and honest wear consistent with age. Internally, the movement components show normal wear, with some dirt and grime noted around the inner case rim.

History
Introduced in 1960, the 20-jewel version of the Seikomatic caliber 603 represented a significant step in Seiko's automatic movement development. Measuring 4.80 mm in height, this rhodium-plated caliber was designed exclusively for automatic winding, lacking a manual-winding facility. This technical choice allowed Seiko's designers to recess the crown at the four o'clock position, emphasizing the automatic nature of the watch by tucking the crown out of sight and creating a perfectly symmetrical case profile.
