About this print

The Daido Gate (Taedongmun) stands above the Taedong River in Pyongyang, Korea. Yoshida travelled through Korea and Manchuria in 1936 and published this design the following year. The gate tower rises against a soft evening sky, while women wash clothes at the water's edge in the foreground, their figures reflected in the still, pale blue river. The quiet gradations of the sky and water show the layered printing for which Yoshida is known.

The jizuri seal (自摺, "self-printed") indicates an impression printed under the artist's direct supervision during his lifetime. Together with the pencil signature and pencil title, it is the feature collectors look for in Yoshida's work.

Condition

Colours are well preserved. As expected for a print close to 90 years old, there are signs of age:
- Toning, mainly to the margins
- Small loss and creasing at the lower left corner, with a short tear at the left edge
- A crease in the lower margin near the pencil signature
- One brown spot in the right margin and a few tiny spots within the image
- Minor edge wear and slight waviness to the sheet
Not backed or laid down. Please examine the photos carefully, as they form part of the description.

About the artist

Yoshida Hiroshi is one of the leading masters of the shin-hanga movement. His landscapes, from the Japanese Alps to India, Korea and the American West, are held in major museum collections and appear regularly at international auctions.

Shipping

Ships from Kyoto, Japan, via EMS (Japan Post) or FedEx, fully tracked and insured. The print is packed flat between rigid boards with protective interleaving. Import duties and taxes, if any, are the buyer's responsibility.
