Makio Hasuike for Arnolfo di Cambio – "Square" dinner service, Italy, 1970s – 28 pieces
Tableware from the "Square" service designed by Makio Hasuike (Tokyo, 1938) for the Collezione Arnolfo di Cambio, manufactured by Società Ceramica Revelli in Laveno, Italy. The service is characterised by softly squared shapes, recessed integrated handles and a black/white contrast, combining Japanese minimalism with Italian functionalism. Pieces from this service are held in the collection of the Museo Internazionale Design Ceramico (MIDeC) in Laveno.
The lot comprises 28 pieces:
• 8 white compartmented fondue plates – approx. 25 × 25 cm
• 3 white dinner plates – approx. 23–25 cm
• 5 white dessert plates – approx. 19 × 19 × 2 cm
• 1 white serving platter – approx. 28–30 cm
• 1 large white salad bowl – approx. [24 × 24 × 8 / 31.5 × 9] cm
• 1 white salad bowl – approx. 18–19 × 8 cm
• 2 deep plates (1 white, 1 black) – approx. 18–19 × 4 cm
• 7 small bowls / ramekins (3 black, 4 white) – approx. 11 × 11 × 5 cm
Marks: impressed stylised "R" with "LAVENO – MADE IN ITALY" on the bases. Three pieces (a fondue plate, a black small bowl and a white small bowl) retain their original silver "Collezione Arnolfo di Cambio – designer Makio Hasuike" label, partly damaged.
Condition: used vintage condition with clear signs of age and use:
• Pronounced crazing in the glaze on several white pieces, especially three of the white small bowls and the flat plates. Brownish discolouration is visible within the crazing.
• One fondue plate is noticeably yellowed and shows surface scratches. Light staining on other fondue plates and inside the large white bowl.
• Crazing on the interior base of one black small bowl.
• Glaze loss on the underside of the black deep plate around the mark (underside only, not visible in use).
• Wear and soiling on all unglazed foot rims.
No chips or cracks noticed. Please study the photos carefully, as they form part of the description. Dimensions are approximate. Carefully packed and shipped with tracking.
