Background Information:

This medieval bronze finger ring is set with a circular blue glass cabochon held securely in a four-pronged bezel. Rings of this type were widely worn during the Crusader period by both the military elite and the civilian population throughout the eastern Mediterranean and the Levant. Blue glass served as an attractive and affordable alternative to precious gemstones while providing an appearance comparable to stones such as sapphire or turquoise.

Finger rings formed an important part of medieval personal adornment and could express wealth, status, devotion, or personal identity. Examples with coloured glass settings are frequently recovered from Crusader castles, urban settlements, pilgrimage centres, and trading ports, reflecting the cultural exchange between Westernope and the Byzantine and Islamic worlds during the High Middle Ages.

The ring was cast in bronze using established medieval metalworking techniques before the bezel was finished by hand and fitted with a carefully shaped glass insert. Workshops across the Crusader States and neighbouring Byzantine territories produced similar jewellery, combining Western forms with eastern decorative influences and locally available materials.

Dating to the 11th–14th century A.D., the ring belongs to the period of the Crusades, when long-distance trade connectedope with the eastern Mediterranean and facilitated the movement of artistic styles, luxury goods, and skilled craftsmen. Jewellery of this kind reflects both practical craftsmanship and the cosmopolitan character of the medieval Levant.

This piece forms a tangible connection to the medieval world, where rings of this type were worn in everyday life and accompanied their owners through a period marked by pilgrimage, trade, and cultural interaction."
