Utagawa Kunisada – Ukiyo-e, *Bijin-ga* (Portrait of a Beautiful Woman)
(Frame not included)
[Publisher] Yamada Shoin / Kajikawa Workshop (1970s)
[Condition] Excellent (rated 95/100); virtually mint condition with superb color printing.
[Size] *Ōban* (Large format); image size: 38.3 x 25.3 cm.
[Materials] Traditional hand-printed woodblock print; traditional mineral and botanical pigments; handmade *washi* paper; woodblock water-based printing technique.
Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was renowned for his *bijin-ga*. His depictions of female dancers—often exuding an allure that is at once decadent, melancholic, and wistful—established a distinctive artistic style.
This piece is part of the series *Masterpieces of Ukiyo-e Beauties* (*Dai-nishiki Ukiyo-e Bijin Meisaku-sen*). The woodblocks were carved by the renowned master carver Kentarō Maeda when he was in his seventies; the work is of exquisite quality and represents a traditional craft worthy of preservation.
