【Product details】
A rare Edo-period (1603–1868) carved wooden kogo incense container modelled as a male mandarin duck. The bird is carefully shaped and engraved with detailed feathers, a curved crest and raised wings.
Mandarin ducks traditionally symbolise marital harmony, devotion and lasting companionship in Japan. The exterior is decorated with a traditional mixture of gold powder and lacquer, rather than ordinary gold-coloured paint. The interior has a fine gold-sprinkled nashiji finish. The naturally worn surface gives the piece a rich and attractive antique character.
The accompanying paulownia wood box was added at a later date and is not original to the kogo.
Good antique condition. The exterior shows age-related wear, revealing areas of darker lacquer beneath. There are small losses around the edges of the wings and tail, together with rubbing to the base. No major damage is present. The later fitted wooden box has minor blemishes from age, and its cord is missing. Please refer to the photos for details.
