Dial and Hands
The beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial features sharp applied details, including gold-tone indices and the distinctive Seikomatic spinning top logo. The crisp printing throughout displays the Seikomatic, DIASHOCK 20 JEWELS, and JAPAN text clearly. Very minor scattered spotting is visible under magnification. The original gold-tone dauphine hands show age-appropriate character, with visible oxidation and spotting on their surfaces.
Case and Crystal
The 36 mm gold-plated case features straight lugs and a smooth, integrated gold-tone bezel. The case exhibits honest wear consistent with age, showing visible plating wear and brassing on the lug edges and caseback perimeter, revealing the base metal on high-friction points. The bezel shows light surface scratches and minor plating wear. The caseback interior is stamped EGP 20 MICRONS and BACK GOLD FILLED. A partially recessed gold-tone crown sits at the four o'clock position. The domed acrylic crystal is clear with no major scratches or cracks visible.
Movement
The watch is powered by the clean Seikosha caliber 603 automatic movement. The rotor and bridges show bright finishing, with no obvious signs of corrosion or damage. The visible engravings read SEIKOMATIC 20 JEWELS, SEIKOSHA, and 603. The timegrapher recorded +8+12s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a period correct gold-tone expansion bracelet that suits the era of the piece. It shows general surface wear and minor plating loss.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The dial is beautifully preserved, showing only very minor scattered spotting under magnification, while the original hands display visible oxidation. The gold-plated case and bezel exhibit honest wear, with visible plating wear, brassing, and light scratches. The movement is clean and, supported by the recorded timegrapher result, is performing very strongly.
Dimensions
36 mm (excluding the crown)
Remarks
This early Seikomatic is highly sought-after by Seiko collectors for its historical significance and distinctive spinning top logo. The beautiful silver sunburst dial and classic 1960s dress watch proportions make this a compelling addition to any vintage Japanese watch collection.
History
The first Seikomatic models, powered by the 603 caliber, were released in 1960. The absence of manual winding allowed Seiko to recess the crown at the four o'clock position, emphasizing the watch's automatic nature. The early Seikomatic movement architecture served as the developmental base for the later Seikomatic Chronometer and the 62 Grand Seiko.
