Περιγραφή από τον πωλητή

Female Nkishi-Type Figure – Songye (attributed) – DR Congo – Wood

Origin: Democratic Republic of the Congo
People: Songye (attributed)
Type: Female figure, Nkishi type
Material(s): Wood, cord and small necklace elements
Height: 19.5 cm (21 cm with stand)
Period: Second half of the 20th century (presumed)
Provenance: Former French private collection

An appealing small female figure attributed to the Songye people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, carved in wood and displaying several characteristic features of the traditional nkishi sculptural repertoire.

Among the Songye, mankishi (singular nkishi) were protective figures associated with spiritual mediation, healing, fertility and the welfare of individuals or communities. Such figures could incorporate ritual substances (bishimba), often placed in cavities in the head or abdomen.

This example is particularly attractive for its expressive proportions and the contrast between its large, rounded head and compact female body.

The face is carefully modelled, with heavy almond-shaped eyelids, an angular nose, a projecting mouth and a prominent chin. The long, cylindrical neck emphasizes the disproportionately large head and gives the sculpture an elegant, elongated silhouette.

The clearly defined breasts establish the figure's female identity, while both hands rest on a prominently rounded abdomen, an arrangement frequently encountered in Songye power figures and associated with notions of protection and fertility.

The short, bent legs and broad feet complete a composition that is both compact and remarkably expressive.

A modest necklace around the neck adds a charming personal detail.

At the top of the head, a small circular opening appears to have been filled. Such openings are known from traditional Songye nkishi figures, where they could accommodate ritual substances. The original purpose and contents of this particular opening cannot, however, be established.

The wood displays a dark brown patina with varied tones, polished areas and localized surface accretions, giving the piece an attractive aged appearance.

A characterful small sculpture, appreciated for its pleasing proportions, expressive face and distinctive female iconography.

Condition

Fair to good overall condition, with visible signs of age and wear.

Surface abrasions, scratches, small chips and irregularities.

A visible age-related crack runs along part of the head, with localized losses and erosion around the temple and facial area.

The circular opening at the top of the head is filled.

Dark, varied surface patina.

Please refer carefully to the photographs, which form part of the condition description.

Included

The wooden figure and its display stand, as photographed.
