THIS IS AN EXCLUSIVE BEST-OF-PHOTOBOOKS AUCTION - by 5Uhr30.com, Cologne, Germany. We guarantee detailed and accurate descriptions, 100% transport protection, 100% transport insurance and of course combined shipping - worldwide. WONDERFUL PHOTOBOOK, showing the CINEMA WORK by Ernst Haas (1921-1986), one of the first members of the legendary photo agency Magnum - in BRANDNEW CONDITION. Pictures of Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe and many others. 'This book offers an unexpected insight into the sets and stars of Hollywood. Set photography has existed since the early days of cinema, and consists of using a camera to take stills that can be used as publicity material for the film. But Haas's ambition was to inscribe a temporal dimension in his images, to impose his principles on the still photographs which, seen one after the other, generate movement and a narrative. 'This book presents the set photographs of Ernst Haas, one of the most famous photographers of the twentieth century. In these photographs he transgresses the boundaries between photography and film. Haas worked with a variety of directors including Vittorio de Sica, John Houston, Gene Kelly and Michael Cimino, covering all genres, from suspense (The Third Man; The Train) to westerns (The Comanches Attack; Little Big Man; The Misfits), comedy (Miracle in Milan; War and Love) and musicals (West Side Story; Hello Dolly!)" (from the publisher)T New, mint, unread; still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher's plastic foil. COLLECTOR'S COPY. Showing set photos of the following movies: - 'The third Man', Carol Reed, 1949 - 'Miracle in Milan', Vittoria de Sica, 1951 - 'Land of the Paraohs', Howard Hawks, 1955 - 'The deep blue sea', Anatole Litvak, 1955 - 'Moby Dick', Johne Huston, 1956 - 'The pride and the passion', Stanley Kramer, 1957 - 'The big country', Willam Wyler, 1958 - 'The journey', Anatole Litvak, 1959 - 'Pontiac star parade', Sidney Miller, 1959 - 'The Missfits', John Huston, 1961 - 'West Side Story', Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, 1961 - 'Taras Bulba', J. Great photobook by Ernst Haas - in perfect condition. 'In 1947, the 'Rotes Kreuz' ('Red Cross') used the reportage and the photographs by Ernst Haas to identify or reunite war victims, which was subsequently published in a feature in Life magazine. Warren Trabant showed Haas' 'Homecoming' photographs to Robert Capa, before they were published. After reviewing his work, Capa invited Haas to travel to Paris and join the then two-year-old international photographic cooperative MAGNUM Photos. Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, David Chim Seymour, Werner Bischof and William Vandivert were already members. In 1950, Ernst Haas then became a full member of MAGNUM. In 1954, Robert Capa, Magnum's first president, was killed on assignment during the First Indochina War. The same year, Werner Bischof died in a car accident in the Andes. After their deaths, Haas was elected to Magnum's board of directors and travelled to Indochina himself to cover the war. In 1958, Haas became vice-president of MAGNUM. After the death of David 'Chim' Seymour in Suez in 1959, Haas became MAGNUM's fourth president in 1960. He made significant and lasting contributions to the organisation as its leader. Haas had a deep understanding of the cooperative's mission and encouraged its members to strive for excellence and innovation. In a letter to Magnum's members, he wrote: 'Each of us wants to make beautiful, eye-catching and extraordinary images. Each of us struggles with our own style.Change comes not only through willpower but never through contentment.Let us be more critical of each other: It will bring us closer. Let us find a new common denominator in the struggle not to follow our own standards of invention. 'Don't cover - discover!' The Ernst Haas Archive is in the care of Magnum Photos and the Haas Studio in New York City.' (Magnum website)
