Unknown - Qur'an - Bihar India - 1425

A really fine quality miniature folio from a Quran originating in the state of Bihar, India, circa 1425. It is written in the very distinctive style of Bihari (after the State), characterised by wide, heavy and extended horizontal lines, and thin verticals. In this case there are 13 lines of fine script on both sides of the folio with gold 'aya' marking the verses and red diacriticals providing devotional direction. It also contains a several 'Allah' in gold. The folio has tow elaborate illuminated marginal Juz marking the chapter headings. Both sides would be worthy of any collection and as such are described below. Pictures 25-04 to 25-04d show the mounted framed folio. This contains the final verses of the Meccan chapter 85, Al-Buruj (Constellations), v:11-22 which condemns the persecution of the Christians of Najran (a city on the borders of Yemen and Saudi Arabia) at the hands of the pagans around 524CE. The tyrants are warned of the torment of burning whereas the believers (the Christians in this case) are promised a great reward in Paradise. It also contains the header of chapter 86, Al-Tariq (The Nightly Star) and the first three verses. Pictures 25-04e and f show the overleaf folio with the remainder of the verses of chapter 86 Surah At-Tariq (The Nightly Star) wherein the verses swear by the heavens and a "night comer" or "night star," which is then described as a "piercing star". While traditionally interpreted as a reference to stars of great brightness or perhaps the stars as a sign of God's power and precision, some modern interpretations connect the description to pulsars, due to their "knocking" sound and rapid rotation. It also contains the heading and first verses of chapter 87, Al-A'la (The Most High) in which the Prophet is ordered to glorify the Lord. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing. Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please do check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
