Arnulf Letto (born 1932 in Berlin) is a German painter who significantly influenced the art scene in Schwäbisch Gmünd for many years. After training as a sign painter, he studied Free Painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Berlin, where he was a master student and recipient of a Max-Beckmann scholarship. From 1959, he reduced his artistic focus to uniform subdivisions of rectangles and squares, excluding color and concentrating on grayscale values. Letto also explored the incidence of light on surfaces, creating objects designed to produce illusory curves for the viewer. He worked for many years as an advertising graphic designer, notably for Carl Zeiss. Since 1996, Arnulf Letto has lived and worked in Southern France, currently residing near Uzès.
