Historic Note
These large wicker masks were typically hung above the gable of one of the entrances or openings of homes.
The primary purpose of these masks was to protect the tribes from disease, misfortune, and adversity.
They also served very important propitiatory purposes, such as female fertility
They are a symbol of the protective woman, mother, and leader of the community.
The mask features carvings and polychrome painting typical of the region's tribal art; entirely handmade.
Today, these objects are extremely rare and of exceptional beauty.
