Δημιουργικές ιαπωνικές κούκλες kokeshi. - Ξύλο - Ιαπωνία - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

This is a delightful set of three creative kokeshi dolls, each dressed in a traditional Japanese mino-gasa (straw raincoat and hood).

These figures represent rural winter attire from Japan’s snowy regions, capturing a nostalgic scene of travellers or villagers wrapped warmly against the cold. Their rounded wooden heads, charming hand-painted expressions, and brightly colored clothing evoke a sense of warmth and simplicity characteristic of mid-20th-century Japanese folk craft.

The bodies are crafted from natural birch wood, giving each doll unique texture and character. Over the wooden torso, the artist added hand-painted details inspired by traditional Japanese clothing. The removable mino straw coats are woven by hand with inner linings in vivid red or green cloth, adding a rustic and authentic touch.

Please note: due to age, two of the straw coats have partially opened (as shown in the photos). This aging is typical of vintage materials and enhances their folk-art character.

These kokeshi offer a charming glimpse into Japan’s rural culture and make a lovely addition for collectors interested in unique, expressive, and story-filled Japanese wooden dolls.

These pieces belong to the category of sōsaku kokeshi (creative kokeshi), produced by anonymous local artisans rather than traditional lineage-style makers. Creative kokeshi emerged in Japan during the mid-20th century, allowing artists to freely design expressions, forms, and clothing using both natural and painted materials. They remain highly valued for their individuality and handmade charm.

The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by mainly Japan Post or DHL depend on the situation.
It will be shipped from Japan, so it takes about 2-3 weeks to receive normally.
