Brass French Striking Lantern Clock ca. 1770 by Forest a St. Vigor.
Good example of a French rural lantern clock from the Normandy region. The clock has an iron posted frame construction on long iron spiked legs. The movement has its original anchor escapement and has a long pendulum. The movement has some unusual details. The clock is mounted on a later wall bracket.
The dial is nicely engraved with Roman numerals, half hour markers and a star pattern in the centre. This single handed clock retains its beautifully shaped steel hour hand. The signature on the clock reads “Forest a St. Vigor”. This seems to be an unknown maker hence it is not recorded in the clock literature.
The 30-hour movement has a going train with anchor escapement and a striking train with a count wheel. The clock also strikes every half hour by means of passing strike.
Both trains in the movement have a winding mechanism, one of them being a later addition, also the pendulum cock is a later replacement. The clock is, apart from these few later repairs, in good original condition.
All in all a good antique French lantern clock in original and working order.
