Lovely Sumerian Alabaster Zoomorphic Bead

Description
Lovely Sumerian Alabaster Zoomorphic Bead
Circa 4th Century BC

An extremely fine Sumerian figurine, finely carved in alabaster and modelled in the shape of a zoomorphic creature, possibly a sheep, of which the entire body is contained within a smooth, single contour. The creature’s appearance has been rendered in a very artistic fashion, from a slightly askew perspective. The bead has been pierced through for suspension.

Statuettes and amulets fashioned in the shape of wild and domestic animals, are among the most representative objects that have been excavated from the Uruk civilisation onwards. Zoomorphic amulets, such as this extremely fine example, would have been worn and carried as a protection against the Evil Eye and bad fortune.

Measurements: circa 2.5cm length, circa 1.9cm height

Provenance: Ex major SM collection 1970-2010, London.
