As Blaise Cendrars writes in his preface: This volume is a compilation work (...) I reproduced these tales as missionaries and explorers brought them back to us in Europe and as they published them (...) The study of the languages and literature of primitive races is one of the most indispensable knowledge in the history of the human mind and the surest illustration of the law of intellectual constancy interviewed by Remy de Gourmont.
