Second edition, partly original, since highly expanded, of this famous gastronomic keepsake (the most important of the romantic period), published under the direction of F. Fayot, the “secretary and biographer of Lent.”

It brings together the main texts of: Brillat-Savarin, Berchoux, Grimod de la Reynière, Colnet, marquis de Cussy, Carême, Dr Gaubert, Chaptal, Lady Morgan, Dr Roques... Bacchic and gastronomic songs.

Illustrated with 22 plates including 14 tipped-in portraits, 8 (of 9) “genre” engravings including 2 on wood and one in chromolithography and 10 engravings in the text. One tipped-in engraving seems to be missing according to Vicaire’s description 177/178. That’s 22 out of 23 plates (8 more than in the first edition):

Good copy preserved in a well-made contemporary red shagreen half binding with corners, spine with raised bands adorned with fine and thick blind-stamped fillets, title in gilded lettering, repeated gilt fleuron stamp. Speckled edges.

Well-preserved condition. Sound binding, slightly faded leather, light rubbing, insignificant marks on the first joint. Fairly fresh inside with some inconsequential scattered foxing. In very good overall condition.
