François de La Rochefoucauld - Les Pensées, Maximes Et Réflexions Morales De M. Le Duc - 1784
No. 59901617
A lovely copy - The Maximes de La Rochefoucauld, as they are commonly referred to, were a great success as soon as they were published in 1665.
It was in the salon of Mme de Sablé that these maxims circulated to be read and approved by the elite of the literati of the Grand Siècle.
Mme la Marquise de Sévigné, the Count of Bussy-Rabutin, the Prince of Conti and many others had front row seats for these readings.
La Rochefoucauld was, however, lenient towards anyone, and all of the greats of the Kingdom of France could easily find themselves reflected in these stunning lines.
All of the high society of the Grand Siècle read the Maximes de La Rochefoucauld, and its echoes have carried on into our 21st century. This work is one of the masterpieces of French literature.
