Ton Smits has a series of ten different cards from the estate of his father who was in the resistance in Kerkrade during the war. The cards are drawn by Ton Smits, who made them in 1943 when he was 22 years old. His family was terrified that the material would be discovered and hid the anti-Hitler cartoons.
Ton Smits (1921-1981) was a painter and cartoonist. His war cards with caricatures of Hitler, Himmler, Göring and Göbbels, but one of Smits' most famous drawings is that of a chick emerging from the egg, looking around the world and deciding to crawl back. Smits received the Golden Palm for this cartoon.
