Daniel Duncan - Explication nouvelle et mechanique des actions animales. Où il est traité des fonctions de l'âme. - 1678

Octavo, full contemporary sheepskin, upper joint split, decorated spine with raised bands, missing leather on the lower part, highly handled copy (see photographs), Paris, d'Houry, 1678, 7 unnumbered, 447 pp.

One of the philosophical reflections on the soul by the masters of the Montpellier School of Medicine. The discourse on the formation of the brain and the nerves is close to that of Steno. Duncan considers that feeling and imagination are close, imagination depending on the action of the "corpus callosum". Duncan’s system is nevertheless compatible with the dominant theory of the time “animal spirits.” The handwritten ex-libris by Benjamin Michael Solier apparently does not correspond to a doctor who left a trace for posterity.
Duncan had to end his career in Holland because, like many others, he was a victim of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
