'Tenma Greengrocers' Market' 天満市場 (Tenma ichiba) from the series 'One Hundred Views of Osaka' 浪花百景 - - Utagawa Isshusai Kunikazu (ac. ca. 1848-1868) - Japan - Late Edo period

A rare print by Utagawa Kunikazu, 'Tenma Greengrocers' Market' (Tenma ichiba) from the series 'One Hundred Views of Osaka' (Naniwa hyakkei). The print, published in 1860, shows the stunning visual of a small hawk swooping down to attack another hawk over the bridge and waters near Tenma Greengrocer's market (Osaka). Osaka artists such as Kunikazu focused largely on the production of actor prints (yakusha-e). This meisho (landscape) series was Osaka's response to the famous works of Edo artist Hiroshige. Kunikazu collaborated with other artists on the series, primarily Yoshiyuki Nansui and Yoshitaki Utagawa. Another similar series 'One Hundred Views of Kyoto' was also published in 1860, featuring the work of Umegawa Tokyo, Yoshitoyo Utagawa and Gyokuen. The print is in the MFA collection, in the Ritsumeikan collection, and in the Tokyo Edo Museum collection: https://collections.mfa.org/objects/472851 The print is highly reminiscent of the print 'Jūmantsubo Plain at Fukagawa Susaki' from Hiroshige's series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo,' which was published just three years earlier in 1857. https://ukiyo-e.org/image/mfa/sc206396 Condition: The print has been trimmed down and attached to a backing. A slight wrinkle; minor spots. Excellent colors with wonderful bokashi. Your shipment: Between sturdy cardboard. Track and Trace and additional coverage (if bidding price permits).
