Die Masken, mit denen wir es hier zu tun haben, bleiben ein Rätsel.

Das umstrittene Wort „Stammes“, das oft zur Definition dieser Masken verwendet wird, ist willkürlich oder zumindest zweideutig: Es gibt nichts, was sie mit bestimmten ethnischen Gruppen in Verbindung bringt, sie könnten genauso gut das Werk einer bestimmten Kaste sein oder eine besondere Bedeutung in sich tragen traditionellere Feste. 

Das einzige Kriterium, um sie zu unterscheiden, ist die äußere Form, die von Designern vorgegeben wurde, die anscheinend alle Regeln ignoriert haben, indem sie ihrer Fantasie folgten: Ihnen fehlt die Formalität der eher klassischen Figuren, die die Gottheiten des Hinduismus oder des tibetischen Buddhismus nach einem streng definierten Schema darstellen Liturgie....
