Icon - Mother of God enthroned flanked by Archangels Michael and Gabriel - .800 silver, Wood, Egg tempera on levkas on wood

An ancient Greek triptych depicting the Mother of God enthroned flanked by the Arch angels Gabriel and Michael. The triptych is painted in vivid colors and the artist must have been influenced by the classical Byzantine iconography and by western baroque concepts as well. Hence this icon might come from a Greek island were the influence of Venetia was felt, like Corfu. The icon has been covered by a silver rizza which covers everything except the faces and hands of the Holy persons. Often these silver parts were donated out of thankfulness for full filled prayers. In the silver above the Mother of God two six winged cherubs are hammered out. In opened state the icon measures 25 x 17 cm. The icon shows signs of intensive use and worship. I must be dated between 1650 -1700. A very mediatative work of art that invites us for silence and prayer.
