'... Kanga shinan 漢画指南 (Instruction in Chinese painting), the work of the prolific painter, theorist, and book designer Kan’yōsai 寒葉斎 (Takebe Ayatari 建部綾足; 1719–1774). The two-volume Kanga shinan contains extended commentaries and line-only illustrations to explain key elements of Chinese literati painting as taught by Shen Nanpin 沈南蘋 (circa 1682–1760), a Chinese artist who resided in Nagasaki from late 1731 to 1733 and enjoyed a wide following in Japan. Kanga shinan was so highly regarded that the Kyoto publisher Hishiya Magobē (Gosharō 五車楼) reprinted it in 1811 using the original blocks. At the same time he commissioned Kawamura Bunpō to produce a second part (nihen).' (Pulverer collection)
'...The first section discusses the rules of landscape painting, the four noble plants *shikunshi 四君子, figures in landscape, and coloring landscape; the second section discusses rules for painting orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemum, plum and stones. Short explanations accompany illustrations.' (JAANUS)
