James Stephen Gresley. (1829-1908) - The Hay Harvest

I am offering for auction a superb mid 19th century watercolour titled The Hay Harvest, by listed artist James Stephen Gresley, 1829-1908. Signed and dated 1855. Sorry about reflections on the glass. Offered with no reserve! The painting measures 42.5 x 25 cm. The frame measures 61 x 45.5 cm. Condition of the painting is good. Please view all photos for accurate condition. Ready to hang. I have taken possession of a collection of several very fine watercolours from a private diseased estate which I am offering in Catawiki. Check out my other auctions. Gresley was born in Sandiacre in Derbyshire. His son was Frank Gresley who had, in turn, two sons, Harold and Cuthbert who were noted artists. Gresley had a number of paintings included in the "Goodey Collection" and in the related book. Gresley lived at Draycott, Borrowash and Chellaston in Derbyshire, but he also lived latterly in Yorkshire, where he created watercolours of the counties where he had lived. Gresley died in Wakefield, Yorkshire, in 1908 after exhibiting in galleries in London and locally. He has several paintings in Derby Museum and Art Gallery with one currently (2011) on display in the Goodey Room in Derby Central Library. Please note. I am on vacation until 2nd May 2024 so all paintings will be posted as soon as I return. Please note. Due to the fragile nature of old frames and glass, our shippers do not provide insurance for any damage caused during transit. We go to great lengths to ensure each painting is packed and protected to a very high standard but sadly cannot compensate or refund for any damage occurring to frames or glass during transit. Therefore the frame and any glass is a gift to you with zero value and you are bidding on the artwork only. Due to Brexit, there are delays at EU customs borders though the situation is improving. Please do not blame me for delays or any customs duty payable. I really appreciate your understanding and patience. Steve.
