Bijzonder mooie en vooral uitzonderlijk grote, originele pagina van de hand van Jiro Kuwata, de tekenaar van de Batmanga (Japanse Batman) | * Shõnen Jupiter gepubliceerd in Bessatsu Shonen King (1965)

Jiro Kuwata (1935-2020) begon op 13-jarige leeftijd als mangaka en is zonder twijfel een van de grootste naoorlogse mangakunstenaars ! 
Zijn carrière werd gedefinieerd in 1957, toen hij Maboroshi Tantei (Phantom Detective) creëerde, dat in 1959 werd aangepast tot een televisieshow. Sindsdien was zijn hoofdonderwerp sciencefiction, superhelden & avontuur. Zijn bekendste reeks was 8 Man maar ook X-Man, Moonlight Mask en Ultra Seven.

In 1966, toen Shonen Gahosha de Batman-rechten verwierf (voor Japan), vertrouwden ze hem het project toe. Voor dit project koos hij ervoor om de stijl van Osamu Tezuka te gebruiken en technieken uit de Gouden Eeuw te combineren met de Batman uit de periode van Bob Kane; een Batman-hoofd in Mount Rushmore-stijl, de breedste auto's ooit gezien en een heleboel gekke wetenschappers
Hij zette zijn manga werk voort tot eind jaren zeventig, maar liep ook tegen depressies en alcoholisme aan. In 1977 bekeerde hij zich tot het boeddhisme en ging slechts af en toe weer aan de slag met manga. 
In 1992 stemde hij ermee in om het laatste nummer van 8 Man te maken.

Jiro Kuwata is een voorloper van de realistische tekenstijl die bekend staat als gekiga. Hij mixte zijn sciencefictionverhalen met een filmische stijl en meer volwassen thema's zoals misbruik, verbroken relaties en verslaving.
Leuk weetje: hij werkte als ghostwriter/artiest voor 'Astro Boy' in plaats van Tezuka toen Tezuka lange tijd ziek was ...
