He studied painting and woodblock printmaking with Tomioka Eisen, a well-known designer of kuchi-e and other typical Meiji prints. Shuntei Miyagawa specialized in quiet genre images of children and women. The sceneries he shows were certainly not typical for the average Japanese citizen. Shuntei rather shows the life style of upper-class families.
