Kaku Yukimi Ishi’dôrô’ 角雪見石灯籠 (snow-showing lantern on square base) - Granite - Japan - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

A great, large 5-part carved granite garden lantern, known as a ‘Kaku Yukimi Ishi’dôrô’ 角雪見石灯籠 (snow-showing lantern on square base). This type is the most well-known traditional Japanese lantern that is relatively close to the ground. ‘Yukimi’ is Japanese for ‘seeing snow’. This name was based on the fact that the ‘Kasa’ 傘 or ‘umbrella’ of the lantern can be covered with snow during the cold winter days. ‘Kaku’ 角 refers to the post, as the four legs together are square in appearance. (Source: Yokoso Japanese Gardens) The individual parts are represent the following: The bottom-most piece, sao 竿 (post) touching the ground, represents chi, the earth 地. The next piece, the chûdai 中台 ('central platform') represents sui 水 (water). Ka 火 (fire), is represented by the section encasing the lantern's light or flame 火袋 (hibukuro). Fû 風 (air) and kû 空 (void or spirit) are represented by the last two sections, top-most and pointing towards the sky. The hibukuro with a nice reticulated shippô design (seven treasures). The band along the chûdai with a relief design of stylized waves. Approx. dimensions: Height 82 cm, Width 77 cm, Depth 67 cm. The age of these lanterns is difficult to determine. We think that this one is from the Shôwa period (1926-1989).It has a light outdoorsy patina by being placed outside for several years. It is in a very good condition. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport. When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity. Spring is here, and it's the perfect time to refresh your garden. Our Japanese garden ornaments are back in stock, ready to add elegance and tranquillity to your outdoor spaces. So keep an eye on us weekly for the newest additions.
