Byōbu folding screen - Ink on Silk(Gold color) , Lacquered wood , metal fittings - Japan - Pigeons on pine tree

It was painted by Japanese artist 上田萬秋 , Banshu Ueda (1968-1952). The title of this work is「三枝之禮」"Sanshi-no-Rei". The title is a beautiful Japanese proverb meaning that even birds have the sense of filial piety, and humans even more so. (The dove is a courteous bird that perches on a branch three branches down from the branch where its parent bird perches. It is a metaphor for the fact that even birds know how to respect their parents.) 上田萬秋 , Banshu Ueda (1869-1952) Japanese painter of the Meiji and Showa periods. Born in Kyoto. Graduated from Kyoto Prefectural Painting School in 1887. Studied flower-and-bird painting under 今尾景年, Imao Keinen. He won many prizes at the New and Old Art Exhibitions, including the third prize at the 10th anniversary exhibition of the Kyoto Art Association in 1900. He also received awards at expositions abroad, including a silver medal for "Flower and Bird" at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1962 and a gold medal at the Liege Exposition in Belgium in 1963, and was active in government exhibitions. In 1919, he participated in the formation of the Japan Free Art Association.
