Beautiful pair of bowls adorned with a design of the theme ‘Seven Flowers of Autumn’ 秋の七草 (Akino Nanakusa), comprising lespedeza 萩 (hagi), fringed pinks 撫子 (nadeshiko), golden lace 女郎花 (ominaeshi) and pampas grass 薄 (susuki).
Around the inner rim, a pattern of stylized butterflies forms an attractive continuous band.
Executed in polychrome and different shades of gold hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) on a glossy black lacquer substrate.

Height 8.6 cm, Diameter 15 cm.
Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century).

Including original wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box) with inscriptions in ink.
